Luca Camacho has more than 20 years of martial arts experience and extensive expertise in handling the sword.
Interview with master craftsman Luca Camacho
When did you start martial arts and where?
I gained my first experience of martial arts in Shotokan Karate at the SSKF Rheinfelden under my sensei Zübeyir Sahin at the young age of around 4. There I was able to deepen my knowledge of Shotokan Karate for more than 20 years. I also gained experience in various Chinese martial arts, including Wutan (20+ years), Baguazhang and Bajiquan Kung Fu (13 years in total) and Wing Chun (8 years). In addition, I had regular training and experience exchanges with MMA, Shin Ken Ryuu Do, HEMA, Boxing and Kickboxing.
How did you come to fight with lightsabers?
I came into contact with Dino, the founder of Swiss Sabers, through one of my private students. He led me to the “dark side of the Force”, so to speak, and so I began to combine my passion for martial arts with the training and technique of lightsabers.
What is your greatest success in a competition, in training or in any other context?
I came 2nd in the Swiss Shotokan Karate Championships. I have also been successful as a teacher, including as vice director of the kung fu group Team Synergy and as an instructor at FaBa Gumdo.
How would you describe your teaching style?
My teaching style is heavily based on visualization and vivid analogies. My aim is not just to show you techniques in the short term, but to give you the tools to get the most out of them with as little effort as possible.
What can the students learn from you?
How your sword becomes you. There is nothing more real than the fight. It is the space where you can recognize the real you and connect with it, because in battle there are no lies. You either stand or you fall.
Which of your qualities has helped you the most in martial arts?
Sincerity. If you try something that doesn’t really belong to you, you will suffer the consequences. Be yourself, only then can you make the best of it.
How does martial arts positively influence your everyday life?
When it gets tough, be happy that you’re still standing, not everyone can do that. It fills me with pride to look back on what I have achieved, because life is as unpredictable as the struggle. Standing means more than simply surpassing others.
What is your approach to teaching children?
Joy. Those who feel good about themselves are also good for others. The new generation needs kindness, only then can they pass it on.
