For many Star Wars fans, owning a lightsaber is part of the ultimate collection. But anyone looking to buy one for the first time is quickly faced with a wide range of terms and technical differences: RGB or Neopixel? Baselit or Xenopixel? What blade length makes sense? And can you actually fight with a lightsaber?
To make the choice a little easier, we answer the eight questions that come up most often when buying a lightsaber.
1. Which lightsaber is suitable for beginners?
In principle, any of our lightsabers can be suitable for beginners. However, the most important question is: What do you want to use your lightsaber for?
For children, we generally recommend an RGB lightsaber. This version is especially durable and is well suited for play and first duels. Since the LED technology is located in the hilt and the light is guided from there into the blade, the blade is less sensitive to bumps and strikes.
On the other hand, anyone who already knows at the time of purchase that the lightsaber is being bought mainly for aesthetic reasons, for example for cosplay, as decoration, or as a collector’s item, should choose a Neopixel lightsaber right away.
Neopixel lightsabers are a little more expensive, but in return they offer especially intense and even illumination. With this version, numerous LEDs are located directly throughout the entire blade. This makes impressive lighting effects possible that cannot be displayed with a classic RGB lightsaber.
A good example of this is the well-known “power-up” effect: when switched on, the blade does not light up fully at once; instead, the individual LEDs are activated one after another. This creates the typical effect known from the Star Wars films.
With an RGB or Baselit lightsaber, by contrast, the light source is located in the hilt. The light is guided through the blade from there. That is why elaborate individual LED animations such as the power-up effect are not possible with this design.
2. Can you really fight with a lightsaber?
Yes, you really can fight with the RGB version. That is exactly why we also refer to it as our Battlesaber version.
The RGB lightsabers are built robustly and are specifically designed to be used even in more intense duels. So if you are not just looking for a lightsaber for the display case, but really want to train and fight with it, this version is an excellent choice.
We even offer our own lightsaber workshops and training sessions. In our training sessions, we use RGB lightsabers exclusively, as their robust construction makes them especially suitable for practical use and regular duels.
So if you already know at the time of purchase that you want to fight with your lightsaber, we recommend our RGB Battlesabers.
3. How much should a good lightsaber cost?
You can get a good lightsaber for as little as around CHF 100, but high-quality models can cost up to CHF 750. It includes everything you need to get started right away.
The scope of delivery includes, among other things:
- Lightsaber hilt
- Blade
- Battery
- Charger
- Instruction manual
- Screws
- Suitable tools
So you do not need to buy any additional accessories to put your lightsaber into operation right away. Simply unpack it, assemble it, and the adventure can begin.
4. What is the right blade length?
The right blade length depends, among other things, on body height, intended use, and personal preference. As standard, our lightsabers come with a 92 cm blade. This corresponds to the classic blade length known from the Star Wars films.
This gives you a well-balanced size that is well suited for appearance, training, and duels alike.
For spinning or fast movements, a shorter blade can be easier to control. Shorter blades are especially popular for Double-Bladed Lightsabers in particular. They offer greater freedom of movement and are easier to control during fast rotations and spin techniques.
For children and smaller people, an especially long blade can also become unwieldy.
Anyone buying the lightsaber mainly for photos or as a collector’s item has much more freedom when it comes to length. For training and spinning, however, care should be taken to ensure that the combination of hilt and blade remains comfortable to control.
Do not worry if you later decide on a different blade length after all. The blade can be swapped out within just a few seconds, so you can adapt your lightsaber to your needs at any time.
You can therefore easily buy another blade length later and switch between different blades.
5. What sounds and effects should a lightsaber have?
Depending on the model, the features may include the following functions, for example:
- Motion sounds
- Clash effects on contact
- Blaster block effects
- different Soundfonts
- Volume control
- Flash-on-Clash
- different colors
- adjustable lighting effects
- Smooth Swing
Smooth Swing is particularly interesting for many fans. Here, the sound changes depending on how the lightsaber is moved. Fast movements produce different sounds than slow movements, for example.
The Neopixel versions already come as standard with a larger selection of pre-installed Soundfonts than our RGB lightsabers.
If you want even more variety, you can download additional Soundfonts from our shop and expand the lightsaber with more sounds.
6. Is a Neopixel lightsaber suitable for duels?
We recommend not using Neopixel lightsabers for duels or hard combat. The LEDs built into the blade are sensitive. In the event of a strong impact, the LEDs can be damaged.
Swinging and spinning are of course possible without any problem. Only strikes against other objects or blades should be avoided.
Please also note: We cannot provide any Warranty for damage caused by such contact.
7. How long does the battery last?
Battery life depends heavily on how you use your lightsaber. Normally, the battery lasts between about 30 minutes and 2 hours.
Various factors can affect the runtime, for example the selected mode, the volume, the brightness, and how often the lightsaber is actively used.
If you want to use your lightsaber over several hours, for example at a convention, a cosplay event, or a gathering, we recommend ordering spare batteries as well. That way, you can simply swap the battery when needed and do not have to recharge your lightsaber in between.
8. Can you change the blade color?
Yes, the blade color can be changed very easily. To do this, hold down the power button for about one second until the blade flashes twice. The lightsaber will then be in color-change mode and you can select your desired color.
In principle, all colors of the color spectrum are available to you, so you can set your lightsaber exactly to your taste.
Detailed operation and all other functions are described thoroughly in the included instruction manual. On our models, the blade color can also be conveniently controlled via the app.
9. Can I build my own lightsaber?
Yes! With our 3D configurator you can put together your very own custom dream lightsaber or even configure a Double-Bladed Lightsaber according to your own ideas.
You have the option to choose from a wide selection of different components and colors and design your lightsaber exactly the way you want. In addition, you can select the blade length and the desired version.
